I’m currently researching the correct gas pump model and color scheme to use for the restoration of my grandfather’s service station, and I’m hoping someone with experience in vintage gas pumps or petroliana might be able to help.
The station originally opened in 1956 as a UTOCO (Utah Oil Company) station, and I know that the original pumps were Wayne 505s. I’m trying to determine what pump model and color scheme would have been used later in the station’s history.
I’m currently trying to determine whether, after the Wayne 505s, the station would most likely have transitioned to the **Tokheim 461** or the **Wayne 734**. I’m particularly interested in determining what would have been historically appropriate for the station during the late 1960s and 1970s.
I have a color photograph of the station from **1978**. Unfortunately, the photograph is extremely blurry, but I can still make out what appears to be **red, blue, and gold** on the gas pumps. Because of the age of the Wayne 505, I have a hard time believing that the original 1956 pumps would still have been in service in 1978. The Wayne 734 and Tokheim 461 for example, is associated with the early 1960s, so it seems like it could potentially fit the timeline.
The part I’m having the most difficulty with is the **color scheme**. Most of the examples I’ve been able to find of the Wayne 734 and Tokheim 461 appear to use red and gold, but I have not been able to determine whether either model was available or commonly used in a blue, American color scheme.
I’ll attach the photographs I have so you can see exactly what I’m referring to, particularly the blurry 1978 color photograph.
My goal is to make the restoration as historically accurate as possible, so I’d really like to determine both **which pump model would have been appropriate for the station during this period and what the correct UTOCO color scheme would have been**.
